The directors of the Bank of England have raised the Bank rate from 2i to 3 per cent. The directors of the London Chartered Bank of Australia recommend the declaration of n dividend for the half year at the vale of G per cent, per annum, and carry forward and place to reserve £BO,OOO. break having occurred at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where a large number assembled and proceeded to threaten life and destroy property, until ihe State Militia were called out, A collision took place between the troops and the rioters. The Militia then fiied upon the crowd, killing ami wounding a large number of persons. Home, May 6. Cholera has made its appearance in Northern Italy, sevetal cases having occurred at Venice and Vicenza. [SPECIAL TO MELBOURNE AGE. j London, April 19. It is authoritatively stated that tin Fiench Government have resolved not to semi further batches of recidivistC' to ISew Caledonia for the present. The statement that it was the intention shortly to send 1000 convicts to New Caledonia is declared to be unfounded. April 20. Dr. Moorhouse arrived in London yesterday. The proposals of Mr Gladstone for the establishment of an Irish Parliament ate viewed with strong disfavour in the northern counties of Ireland, where much bitterness of feeling prevails. In connection with the scheme, a movement has been started for raising a fund to be expended in furnishing Loyalists or Protestant Irish with equipments for war that they may be prepared for any eventuality. April 21. Mr Gladstone has written a letter to the Quebec Legislative Assembly*, expressing his thanks for the action of that Chamber in passing a resolution approving of his Home Rule policy. News has been received of a hostile encounter between the, Greek and Turkish outposts on the frontier of Thessaly. The Turks were repulsed. The Government of Greece have repudiated the action of the Grecian commanders, who are held to be responsible for the outbreak.
April 23. The sending of an ultimatum from the Great Powers to Greece has been delayed owing to the Russian Government not having yet given their assent. Dr. Moorhouse has been interviewed hy a representative of the Pall Mall Gazette. In the course of the interview Dr. Moorhouse spoke in eulogistic terms of the colony and people of Victoria.
Mr Chamberlain, addressing his constituents at Birmingham last evening, stated that whilst he was opposed to the Irish land purchase scheme of the Government, he would support a modified system of Home Rule, which should provide that a certain proportion of Irishmen might continue to sit in the Impeiial House of Commons, and that two Pailiaments should be established in Ireland, one to represent the South, and the other to sit in Ulster and represent the Protestant population.
In connection with the land purchase scheme submitted to the House of Commons, it is provided that'in cases where the Irish tenants of any estate refuse to talc* advantage of the facilities proposed to be given them for purchasing their farms, the State will assume the ownership. Viscount Sherbrooke has announced that he is opposed to the Irish policy of the Gladstone, Government.
