MEMORIAL TO THE LATE EDMUND BAREF.

A public meeting, called by advertisement, of gentlemen desirous of seeing a tombstone on the grave of the late Edmund Banff was held in the Town Hall on Friday evening last • Mr R.J. Seddon was called upon to preside. It appeared that on the 19th ult., at Dillman’s Town, a number of gentlemen met together in an impromptu manner, and resolved to establish a fund for this purpose. At this meeting there were present the Hon. Mr Larnach (Minister of Mines), R. J. Seddon, Esq,, M.H.R., J. Clarke’ E-q., M.C.C., H. Burger, Esq., Mayor of Kumara, and Messrs W. Morris and G. Mansfield. Messrs Dungan, Mulvihill, and J, Gilbert spoke very feelingly on the subject, and, as well as the chairman, paid respectful comments on the merits of the deceased gentleman. A motion having bren unanimously carried that a Committee he formed for the purpose of raising funds to erect a headstone, fence, &c., upon the grave of the late Edmund Baiff, Mr G. R. Rudkin was elected Secretary and Treasurer, and instructed to procure 100 subscription lists for the purpose. Messrs Seddon, Hanna, Mulvihill, Dungan, Gilbert, M. Maloney, G. R. Rudkin, and Jorgensen were appointed a Committee.

The following canvassers were appointed ;—Main Street—Messrs Mnlvihill, Dungan, and J. Gilbert. Seddon Street—Messrs Seddon, M. Maloney, Rudkin, Hanna, and Jorgensen. It was resolved that lists be sent to the following gentlemen, asking their kind cooperation in their respective districts;

Westbrook—Messrs Foley, Costello, and Kiely. Greenstone—Messrs King, Morgan, and Harris.

Cape Terrace—Messrs Skinner, Tan sey. and O’Hara.

Dillman’s Town—Messrs W. Mortis, D- Callaghan, and P. Moran,

Waimea—Messrs Fitzgibbon, Tennant, M‘Whirter, M. Morris, T, Smith, and W. Wilson.

Stafford—Messrs J. F. Byrne, Sandle, Hogan, and J. Murphy.

Hokitika—Messrs j. Clarke, Bonar, Bevan, Jack, and Horgan. Ross—Messrs J. Grimmond, Hirter, Daly, and Malfroy. Kanieri and Rimu—Messrs Perry, Hogan, T, Bums, H. Isbester, O’Brien, and 0. Rose. It was resolved that the Bank of New South Wales be appointed Bankers, and that Messrs P. Dungan and G. R. Rudkin sign all cheques on the committee’s account, and that the purposes of the fund be advertised in the Kumara, Hokitika, and Ross papers.

A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded tlie meeting.
