WESTLAND RACING CLUB EASTER MEETING.

The following are thn results of the first day’s races at the Easter meeting of the West'and Racing Club, as reported by the Times: Open Handicap—£2s; second horse to receive £5 from stake; 1 mile. Mr Crowley’s h g Nor’Wester ... 1 Mr Alexander’s ch m Duchess of Albany ... ... ... ... 2 Mr Vansittart’s br g Cardinal ... 3 Lady Helen also ran. This was a good race between the two first horses; they got away to a good start, the horses being all in a cluster together. Coming past the stand, the Duchess drew away from the ruck, Nor’Wester lying close np. Going up the hill, the leaders drew further away from the others, Duchess still keeping the lead. Coming into the straight it was anybody’s race, both horses running neck and neck. On nearing home a desperate struggle ensued, when Nov’Wejster shot ahead and won under the whip, the Duchess close up, with Cardinal a bad third, Totalisator—dividend, £5 6s. Hack Race —£lo ; 1 mile ; for horses that have not won £ls in one stake * or plate; post entry, 10s. For this race four horses started, but the race soon proved to he a moral for Mr Ramsay’s Countess, who won hands down. Totalisator, £4l—dividend, £2 6s. Hokitika Handicap — £so ; second horse to receive £5 from stake; miles and a distance. Messrs Warren and Jones’ b h SitWilliam (Stevenson), Bst. 51b. ... 1 Mr T. Harley's ch fa Marquis, Bst. 121 b. (Quinn) ... ... ... 2 Mr J. Card’s b g Barney. 7st. 121 b. (Fane) ' ’ 3 Nor’Wester, Hazard, Billy Kraaft, and Maggie also ran. Barney got away with a good lead, and it seemed at first as if he was going to repeat his performance at Christmas. Billy Kraaft made an effort to keep up, but soon dropped behind. Marquis and Sir William kept well in hand throughout. Nor’Wester seemed disposed *at one time to take things into his own hands, but found the race too warm. Passing the stand the second time Sir William closed upon Barney and the two raced together for some distance, finally Barney cried out “Enough,” and surrendered his place to Marquis, who made a gallant struggle to catch the bay, but without success; the big weight and heavy course telling severely on him. Maggie had a bad start, but never seemed to have any show of making it up. This race, as well as the Open Handicap, proved rather a slip up for the knowing ones, who had put their money on Marquis and the Duchess. Totalisator. £194; dividend £5 ss. *
