The Kumara Times Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, APRIL 27, 1886.

We published to-day at 2 p.m., up to which time there was no news of the result of the Westland Handicap, to be run this afternoon.

The sports in connection with the Hospital Fete take place to-day ; and as the weather wears a better aspect, it may be expected there will be a large gathering on the Recreation Ground. The Fancy Goods and Curiosity Stall will no doubt be a source of great attraction. The Brass Band will play all afternoon, and those who delight in dancing will find a capacious floor for indulging in the graceful exercise.

The concert and ball for the benefit of the Kumara Hospital were held in the Theatre Royal last night, and were both largely attended. For some time before the curtain rose for the concert every available seat seemed to be occupied, and more accommodation had still to be provided. On the whole the concert may be regarded as a success, and the takings at the ball were, we understand, equal to those at previous festivals. A fuller notice will be given to-morrow. The School Committee election takes place this evening, at the State School, at 8 o’clock sharp. Mr D. S. Millar, who has been chief clerk at the Hokitika Post Office for more than six years, has been ordered to Westport to take charge of that office for six months, Mr Stevenson, the postmaster at Westport, proceeding to Greymouth to replace Mr Calders, who goes on a visit to Europe. Mr Millar has proved himself a very efficient officer. Ho was for a time in charge of the office at Kumara, during the absence of Mr MacDennott as mail agent to San Francisco, a delegation Mr Millar also has had the honour of fulfilling. We wish this deserving officer further promotion. The coach that was upset the other evening on the Christchurch road was this afternooou taken on to Hokitika to be repaired. The original quadrille assembly will j meet at the Public Hall, Dillmau’s Town, i to-morrow evening. I

All accounts against the estate of the late John Peters are required to be rendered to the residuary legatees on or before Friday next,

The first event, of the Handicap footrace, 100 yards, was won by Stewart Shurman. W. J. M‘llroy and Co., Main street, Kumara, beg to announce that they are purchasers of gold.— [Advt.] Truth and Soberness. —What is the best family medicine in the world to regulate the bowels, purify the blood, remove costiveness and biliousness, aid digestion, and stimulate the whole system ? Truth and soberness compels us to answer, American Co.’s Hop Bitters, being pure, perfect, and harmless. See
