The Ministerial party (the Times informs us) left Ross early yesterday morning, accompanied by Mr Be van, M.H.R., the County Chairman, Professor Black, and other gentlemen, and arrived at Ogilvie’s at about half-past eleven, where they were met by Messrs Dungan and Daly, of the County Council. The whole party arrived at Rimu at about one o’clock, and were received with acclamation by a goodly number of miners at that place.—A meeting of the County Council took place last night to receive and welcome the Minister of Mines. There were present—The Chairman and Councillors Grimmond, Daly, M'Whirter, Dungan and M‘Goldrick. As the Ministerial party were detained in consequence of pressing business at Kanieri, to an extent beyond what they anticipated, the meeting was adjourned till eleven o’clock this morning.

To-day was a busy day at the Court House. Our reports are unavoidably held over.

Commander Edwin wired shortly after noon to-day :—“lndications glass fall, and cold or frost to-night.”

The “Called Back” Dramatic and Comedy Company are expected in Kumara next week. On their first night (Thursday) they will play the highly amusing comedy of “The Strategists” for the benefit of the Literary Institute. In our notice yesterday of the suicide in a cab in Regent street, London, of Lord Anthony Ashley-Cooper, who succeeded to the earldom on the death of his late father the seventh Earl of Shaftesbury, it was stated that he was only 35 years of age : his age is 55. Lord Ashley, his eldest son or heir, is 17 only. The moon in its monthly revolutions this year passes very close, of course apparently only, to the planet Jupiter. On February 21st Jupiter was only 8 minutes north of the Moon ; on March 20th, 23' N. ; to-day, at 11.30 p.m., it will be 29 minutes north ; next month 25' N., and, on the 10th of June one minute only north of the moon. The foregoing calculations being for the meridian of Greenwich, Jupiter will probably be seen from this southern latitude occulted to-night at 11.30.

Mr Matthew Burnett arrived in Greymoutb on Wednesday evening in company with Mr D. C. Cameron. He was most heartily received. A reception meeting was held in the Public Hall which was crowded. His Worship the Mayor, Mr Nancarrow, presided. Mr Burnett was welcomed by the clergy and all Temperance organisations. Mr Cameron reviewed the Hokitika and Kumara mission, and predicted that the Greymouth district would add a thousand to the crusade. Mr Burnett’s inaugural address was delivered with immense energy. The Mayor, amidst loud and continuous cheering, signed the first pledge and donned the blue, and his example was followed by a number of prominent citizens. The dread of the catapult is not alone confined to the person, but householders are in constant fear of their windows. Lately a stone from one of these missiles ricochetted off the ground and through a window into Mr Bremond’s Hotel, costing him sixteen shillings to replace the pane of glass. Parents and the police are warned of the consequences of allowing the use of these dangerous weapons in town.

Mr Theodore Lechner, an old colonist who had turned his hand to many things, journalism amongst others, and who was best known in these parts as “The Outsider,” has at last paid the debt of nature, and gone to his long home. We are pleased to learn, by the Guardian, that Mr M. F. South, Clerk of the District Court, Hokitika, who has of late been suffering from an affection of the liver, and was recently taken to the Westland Hospital, is gradually regaining his accustomed state of health,

The attention of all persons haying claims against or being indebted to the estate of the late Syvert Rynning, alias Sigviart Ryming, is directed to a notice in another column.

The Grey Education Board have elected Mr Nancarrow chairman.
