-uengtliy cablegrams, received late this afternoon, are given of Mr Gladstone’s proposals for the government of Ireland. Elsewhere we give a somewhat condensed report of Mr Burnett’s first meeting in this town. He is announced to conduct a mass meeting at Drummond’s Corner this evening, at half-past seven, and, in the Theatre Royal, at eight will give one of his famous u Pictures from Real Life.” At three o’clock tomorrow, in the same theatre, there will lie a united gathering of teachers, scholars, parents, and friends, when Mr Burnett will give an address on “New Zealand’s Hope.”
Notice is given that the Rev. Dr. Redwood, Bishop of Wellington, will celebrate Mass at St. Patrick’s Church tomorrow, at 8 a.m. Father Walshe will celebrate the 10 o’clock Mass ; after which Confirmation will be conferred on between fifty and sixty children. His Lordship will preach at the Confirmation ceremony, and also at the evening devotion.
Mr Burnett is announced to deliver an address in the Presbyterian Church tomorrow morning at 11 o’clock, on “A Royal Visit to Jerusalem.” And in the evening he will occupy the Wesleyan pulpit, discoursing upon the subject of “ The Raising of Lazarus.” The Christchurch coach arrived this afternoon at half-past three o’clock. The news to-day from the Grey River Hospital regarding Dr. MacCarthy, we regret to say, is no more assuring than it has been for days past—if anything rather the reverse.
A cable message has been received at Hokitika stating that Mr H. R. Rae will return to his duties in about a fortnight, very much improved in health.
Commander Edwin wired yesterday, at 3.26 p.m.—“lndications of sharp frost to-night.” And at 12.5 this afternoon—- “ Bad weather may be expected after 16 hours from now between east and north and north-west. Indications show rain. Glass further fall. ”
A meeting of the Hospital Easter F6te Committee will be held in the Town Hall on Tuesday next, at half-past seven o’clock. There will be a special meeting of the Hospital Trustees at eight o'clock the same evening. A tea meeting and concert to welcome the recently-arrived Church of England clergyman, the Rev. Thos. Hodgson, is to be held in the Theatre Royal on the evening of Tuesday, May 18. The friends of Mr James Jones, billiard marker, Greymouth, will regret to learn that the paralytic stroke which overtook him on Tuesday last terminated fatally yesterday afternoon at the Grey River Hospital. The Argus remarks that the poor fellow seemed never to have recovered from the shock to his system. Word was sent in to Wm. Jones that his brother was in a critical state. He at once started for the Hospital, but arrived there too late by a few minutes, the vital spark having fled. Deceased was exceedingly kind-hearted and amiable and inoffensive.
Both the Kuraara and Dillman’s quadrille assemblies, on Thursday and Friday evening respectively, were well attended.
