BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening; present—His Worship the Mayor (H. Burger, Esq ) Councillors Anderson, Killeen, Zie«ler Fuzsimons, Maloney and Olden. ° ' The minutes of the previous ordinary meeting, held on March 18th, were read and confirmed. NEW COUNCILLOR. Mr John Jorgenscn, one of the two newly-elected borough councillors, made the usual declaration, and then took his seat as,a councillor. CORRKSPOXDF.VOE. The outward correspondence was read and approved of.
The inward correspondence was read and received, and considered. HOSPITAL TRUSTEES. Mr R. E. Wylde, Secretary to tlio Kumara Hospital Trustees, wrote asking when the Council intended to elect si Tinstee to the Hospital, as the contributors had already elected theirs, and the old Hospital Committee had ceased to act. In reply to Cr. Ziegler, the Chairman stated that it was competent for the local bodies of Hokitika and Ross to nominate a Trustee to act with the ELumara Hospital Trustees. The Council need not necessarily appoint a borough councillor. Cr. Jorgeusen proposed that Mr G. It. Rudkin be appointed to represent the Borough Council as a Kumara Hospital Trustee. He had had cousideiable experience in Hospital matters, and would be a good representative. Cr. Ziegler seconded the motion. Mr Rudkin, Town Clerk, declined. Cr. Maloney then proposed Cr. Anderson. Cr. Anderson declined. Cr. Maloney then proposed Cr. Jorgensen. Cr. Jotgenson declined. The Mayor proposed that Cr. Maloney be appointed a Trustee of the Kumara Hospital on behalf of th;> Borough Council. Cr Ziegler seconded the motion. This motion was carried, and Cr. Maloney was therefore elected. The Mayor stated they could now elect a councillor to represent the Kumara Borough Council as a Hokitika Hospital Trustee, and also a Ross Hospital Trustee if they chose. He would propose that Cr. Anderson be appointed a Trustee of the Hokitika Hospital on behalf of the Borough Council of Kumara.
The motion was seconded by Cr. Ziegler, and carried. A letter was read from the Secretary Kumara Fire Brigade asking the permission of the CoiiDcil to erect a platform in front of the Brigade station for the purpose of ladder practice liy the brigade. The Mayor stated, as Captain of the Brigade, that the platfurtn would not encroach on the lino of the footpath, and it was only asked for permission to erect; the expense would be borne by the brigade.
On the motion of Cr. Ziegler, seconded by Cr. Jorgeusen, the request was complied with. PUBLIC WORKS REPORT. The Town Clerk then read the Public Works Committee's Report, which was received and considered. It recommended that the swampy ground near the entrance to the Church of England be filled up. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Ziegler, the recommendation was adopted. FINANCE. The Town Clerk then read .the Finance Committee's Report. It recommended the payment of ordinary accounts amounting to «£73 10s Bd, and also £ll to Mr R. Toms for clearing and grubbing cemetery, as per contract. The report was adopted, and the sum of aB4 10s Sd passed for payment. NEW CO3MITTEE-.MEN. The Mayor, by leave, amended a motion standing iD his name, and moved—" That the name of Cr. Francis Olden be added to the Finance Committee, the name of Cr. John Jorgensen to the Public Works Committee, and the name of Cr. George Anderson to the Cheque-signing Committee." Cr. Maloney seconded the motion, which was carried. REPAIRS TO CEMETERY. The Mayor, by leave, moved—" That the question of dealing with the repairs to the Cemetery be referred to the-Pub-lic Woiks Committee, with power to act or call for tenders." As was well known they had applied to the County Council to pay a share of the expense in improving the Cemetery: and although the County Council had voted an amount up to £SO for that purpnsp, they had not been courteous enough to reply to a telegram sent to that b»dy on ihe subject. Cr. Maloney seconded the motion, which was carried. [[t may here be staled that the Town Cleik was advised next day of this vole by the Acting County Clettc, who regretted the omission in not advising in due course.—Ed. K.T.J UOUXDAR7 TRACK. • ■ Cr. Ziegler, as L'haiiriiati of the Public Works Committee, reported verbally on the state of the borough boundary track. Whereupon the Mayoi moved and Cr. Maloney seconded—'-That the question of putting the boundary track in a state of repiir be leferred to the Public Works Committee, to "•per?. ><> "next meeting;" which motion wa.< carried.
TIMBER LICENSES. GV. Joi'i;i'i).>ei) said ho believed there were several persons cutting timber for sale on the Borough Reserve who had no lioi-n.se. The Town Clerk explained that there were four or five persons so doing whose licenses had about expired. It was resolved that the Borough Inspector be instructed to make inquiries into the matter, .and report to the Council. This coucluded the bu.siu.ess of the Council.
