The following communication from the Minister of Mines, who is at Clyde, Utago, on his way to tiic month of the ETaast River. West Coast, has been kindly handed to us for publication :

To R. J. Seddon, Esq., M.H.R., Kumara. I see no objection to Mr Gordon complying with your request to report on question of connecting No. 1 and No. 2 sludge-channels, and I am communicating with him to that effect. Am now on my way to West Coast. Will visit Lake Wanaka and Haast Pass. W. J. M. Larnach. Clyde, March 31, 1886.

The Mines Department is offering all the water-races on the coast to the various counties in which they are situated. The Argyle Race has been offered to the Duller County, and the Nelson Creek Race to the Grey County. The latter offer was declined, as a great deal of fluming required renewing. The Christchurch coach arrived this afternoon, bringing East Coast and European (by the direct steamship Rimutaka) mails.

Mr Edward T. Robinson, commission agent, Greymouth, has filed a petition to be adjudged a bankrupt. The original quadrille assembly will hold their first dance of the season at the Public Hall, Dillman’s Town, this evening, at eight o’clock. A brass baud is enaged for the season.

The go-as-you-please match being arranged between Haylett and Laurie has fallen through.

The Lyell Times of Saturday last reports that a robbery of a tail-race occurred on the previous Sunday night at Matakitaki, in Thompson and Hewitt’s claim. The race contained the result of three months’ washing, and was estimated at about 25 ounces of gold. The matter was reported at the Lyell Police Station by telegraph on Monday following, and Mounted-Constable Bowden left on Tuesday to make inquiries, which, from a police point of view, were satisfactory. The largest ship in the world is the Great Eastern, which is 679 ft; in length, 82ft. beam, and 48ft. depth, measuring 18,916 tons gross. The City of Rome is the next largest steamship afloat, with a length of 546 ft., breadth 52ft., and a gross registered tonnage of 8415, and a net tonnage of 5532, according to official figures. The largest American steamships are the City of Peking, Pacific Mail steamship Company, 6000 tons, 423 ft. long, 48ft. broad; the Liguria, Pacific Steamship Navigation Company, 4820 tons, 460 ft. long, 45ft. broad; the Brittanic, White Star, 4,700 tons, 455 ft. long, 45ft. broad; the City of Richmond, Inman, 4600 tons, 453Jft. long, 43ft. broad ; and the Bothnia, Ounard, 4500 tons, 425 ft. long, 42ift. broad.
