HANDICAP RIFLE MATCH FOR A SILVER CUP. The seventeenth, and, as it proved, the final, competition for the silver cup ijiven by his Worship the Mayor (H. Burger, Esq.) for encouragement in the practice of rifle shooting, took place on Saturday last, 27th inst., and was won l>y Vol. Charles Merveldt, Captain Davies taking second priz-*. This contest was commenced on the 30th October last, and has therefore extended over a period of five months. There was no firing in February, owing to a scarcity of ammunition. The conditions and ranges were as follow : - 200, 400, and 500 yards ; seven shots at each range. Targets, 200 yards, 6 feet by 4 feet, centre, round, 18 inches, imlLs-eye 8 inches, round ; 400 and 500 yards, Government regulations, 6 feet by 6 feet, centre, ronnd, 4 feet; bulls-eye, 2 feet, round. The conditions were that the principal trophy, the Cup, should bi; won three times by any competitor, handicap included. The second prize consisted of the amount which should accrue from all entrance fees and sighting shots, to be given to the second highest scorer.
