BOROUGH COUNCIL.

+ The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening; present —His Worship the Mayor (H. Burger, Esq.), Councillors Anderson, Killeen, Olden, Mulvihill, and Ziegler. The minutes of the previous ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The outward correspondence was read and approved of. The inward correspondence was read and received, and considered. The monthly contiibntion to the Westland District Hospitals aud Charitable Aid Board to the 31st March, 1886, applied for by the Secretary, Mr John Peake, was passed for payment.

A letter was read from Mr James Holmes applying for permission to conBtruct a tunnel under Seddon street, between Preston's Hotel unci the town boundary, to enable him to carry water on to Nardoo Terrace. Mr Holmes stated that he would undertake to make it secure, and to the satisfaction of any person the Council might appoint to inspect the same.—'On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Or. Olden, the request was granted. Mr John O'Hagan wrote calling the attention of the Council to a nuisance "which existed on premises occupied by Chinese adjacent to his property in Main street, which for the geneial health of the town and his tenants in particular he trusted the Council would remedy.—On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Olden, it was resolved that the attention of the Inspector of Nuisances be called to the matter, and that he take prompt action to get the nuisance complained of removed. The Churchwardens of Holy Trinity wrote drawing the attention of the Council to the dangerous state of the road near the entrance to Holy Trinity Church, and requesting that a lamp may be elected to enable people to avoid danger or serious injury.—On the motion of Ci. Anderson, seconded by Cr. Ziegler, the letter was lefened to the Public Works Committee, to report at next meeting. PUBLIC WORKS. The Public Works Committee's Report was then rend, as follows: "The Town Clerk reported having seen the contractors for sections 3 and 4, Borough Resorve, and that they stated they were willing to put on more labour to get the work finished, but could not obtain it. "The Committee now recommend that the Chairman and Town Clerk be authorised to put on the necessary labour to complete sectious 3 and 1- on the Borough Reserve." The report was received and adopted. struct a funnel under Scddon street, already dealt with. CEMETERY SEXTON. Cr. Olden, by notice, inovnd—"That the resolution of tin- Council on the 15th June, 1882, appointing Mr J. B. Henhum a sexton, be rescinded, and that Mr F. Keenan, day labour man, be appointed to do the work in his ordinary capacity, with extra fees. The motion was seconded by Cr. Mnlvihill, and carried. POUNDKEEPER. The Mayor, by notice, moved that the Council do now appoint a poundkeeper in the place of die late Nathan Seddon. The motion was seconded by Cr. Olden, and carried. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Ziegler, Mr F. Kennan, the clay-labour man, was appointed Poundkeeper. LAMP AT POST OFFICE. Cr. Olden, by leave, moved " That a lamp be erected at the Post Office, at a place to lie approved of by the Public Works Committee." Or. Mnlvihill seconded the motion. Cr. Ziegler moved as an amendment—- " That the question stand over for six months." The Mayor considered that a lamp ought to lie provided by the Post Office authorities. . The amendment was not seconded, hut on a division being taken, the original motion was lost, only the mover and seconder, Crs. Olden and Mnlvihill, voting for it, and the Mayor and Crs. Anderson, Ziegler, and Killeen against it. This concluded the business of the meeting.
