NEWS IN BRIEF.
[From the Auckland Herald.] The thermometer recently in Adelaide registered 160 deg. in the sun. Sir Charles and Lady Dilke intend starting on a tour of the Australian colonies. In New South Wales the consumption of tobacco for 1885 was 3,407,2271h5., as against 2,503,2031h5, in Victoria. It is proposed to erect monuments to mark the sites of the engagements at the Gate Pa and and Te Rangn. The value of colonial wool in the past year has fallen to a lower level than has been witnessed since 1848. A Maori lunatic recently appeared in New Plymouth, his craze being that he was Captain Cook, Within the last few days a number of patties have left New Plymouth to ascend Mount Egmout. Among the climbers are a number of ladies. Mr Travers, solicitor, has given a lengthy opinion to the Wellington Distiict Charitable Aid Board on the working of the Act passed last session. The proposal has been adopted for laying a duplicate cable between England and Australia, via the Cape of Good Hope.
