February 26. Sir R. N. Fowler, replying to Mr Henniker Heaton, doubts whether the colonies would acquiesce in a proposal to establish a penny post system between the United Kingdom and tincolonies.
Mr Hennicker Heaton intends to renew the question of establishing a post card service, and invites Government to parley with the colonies. It is expected that the precedent established in the case of the Victorian Government's claim against the Oriental Bank, will apply to the Government, of South Australia with regard to the Commercial Bank.
February 27. Mr James Murray has beeu appointed a member of the Fijian Legislative Council.
The free sale of colonial wines at the Indian and Colonial Exhibition has been conceded.
The Economist, referring to the failure of the Commercial Bank, expresses the belief that confidence in the other Banks has not been shaken. The New South Wales wines for exhibition at the Indian and Colonial Exhibition have f>rrived in excellent condition.
February 28. A conference on Imperial federation is to be held in July, and the Colonial branches of the Federation League, have been invited to send delegates. The operatives in the factories of Messrs Nettlefold and Sons, screw manufacturers, Birmingham, have struck, and rioting has taken place in consequence.
The German Emperor is afc present confined to his room, suffering from the effects of a fall.
The boycotting of the Cork cattle steamers, which has been carried on for some time, past, is about to cease, Mr Parnell having arranged a compromise.
