BEFORE THE BATTLE.
m The following bit of graphic description is from a new romance, "Kin" Solomon's Mines." In the o.ffort to reach these, the hero encounters many penis and strange sights. One of these is a battle; and it is just before this that he indulges in the following reflections:—"l shook my head, and looked again ,-t ihe sleeping mmi, and to unfiled and yet excited imagination it seemed a.s though dcr.ih h:ul already touched them. My mind's eye singled,
out those who were sealed to slaughter, and there rushed in upon my lie;irr. a great sense of the mystery of human life, and au overwhelming sorrow at its futility and sadness. To-night these thousands slept their healthy sleep; to-morrow tbey, and many others with them, ourselves perhaps among them, would be stiffening in the cold; their wives would be widows, th"ir chilldien fatherless, and their place know them no more for ever. Only the old moon would sbine serenely on, the night wind would stir the grasses, and the wide earth would take its happy rest, even as it did aeona before these were, and will do seons after they have been forgotten."
