There was a much larger congregation at Holy Trinity Church last evening in attendance at the Mission Service than on the previous evening, the Rev. Mr Mason having adopted the expedient of carrying two banners from the junction of the principal streets and singing a hymn on the way. By this means a large audience was secured. The services will be continued this evening and tomorrow. The Rev. Mr Hodgson, the new Anglican minister for this church, arrived on horseback in Kumara, from Christchurch, on Wednesday evening.
There were only five formal nominations received for membership of the Arahura Licensing Committee yesterday, namely, those of Messrs J. F. Byrne, M. H. Fitzgibbon, Murphy, Robertson and Tennant, who are therefore duly elected. In the Resident Magistrate’s Court today, before J. Giles, Esq., R.M., judgment was given in the case in which Mr Joshua Gibson appeared by power of attorney from Samuel M'Nair, contractor, of Melbourne, to recover possession of a dwelling-house, situate in Seddon street, Kumara. It will be remembered that a point of law was set up by defendant as to the question of tenancy, and judgment wa§ deferred for a fortnight.—His Worship to-day ordered defendant to give up possession on or before Saturday, the 27th inst.
Messrs David Girdwood and James Kerr, both of Greymouth, have been appointed to seats on the Waste Lands Board. It is, of course, only consistent that Greymouth should be represented on a Board which extends its jurisdiction all over the two counties of Westland and Grey.
• News has been received in Hokitika (the Guardian states) that the result of the trial washing at Kelly Terrace Gold Mining Company is at the rate of 12ldwts. to the load. This is a splended return, and the directors are about to try a few loads from another portion of the drive, the result of which will be known on Friday evening at the meeting of shareholders.
His Excellency the Governor of Victoria and Lady Loch and family, are at present residing at their new country house at Mount Macedon.

Moral Turpitude.— Blame attaches to :l jury of intellgent men when they condemn a man for crime whose moral nature has been perverted by indigestion, diseased liver and kidneys. A thoughtful judge may well consider whether society would not be better served by ordering a bottle of American Co.’s Hop Bitters for the unfortunate in the dock instead of penal servitude. Read
