j UNITED TRESS ASSOCIATION.! Blenheim, February 8. Patiick O’Sullivan, landlord of Springland’s Hotel, was charged at the R.M. Court with stabbing John O'Sullivan, landlord of the South Star Hotel. The accused was remanded for eight days on substantial bail, the wounded man being too ill to attend. Both men were drinking together on Saturday, when a quarrel arose and John struck Patrick, and the latter, who had an open clasp-knife in his hand, inflicted a severe cut on the back of John’s left ear, either whilst returning John’s blow, or whilst raising his hand to protect himself. Dr. Porter considers his life not out of danger, the cut extending from the lobe of the ear four inches towards the spine. The wounded man lost a great quantity of blood. Wellington, Februaiy 8. Another accident occurred on the Wellington - Masterton railway. On Saturday afternoon a passenger train was being pushed up the steep incline on the Featberston side of the Ritnu taka, and had just passed through the tunnel when the gripping apparatus of the engine gave way, and the train began to run down the hill. The brakes were applied, and fortunately held the train, bringing it up in the tunnel. The lady passengers became greatly excited, several fainting ; ,nd screaming, the darkness adding to their fright. Most of the passengers jumped out, some sustaining slight injuries. If the train had moved alter the passengeis had jumped out, some of them would have been crushed to death.
