The Kumara Times Published Every Evening. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1886. VISIT OF THE GOVERNOR.
Hi 3 Excellency Governor .Tervois, accompanied by his son, Major Jervois, (who acts ,is Private Seors-tnry), and Mr Lnncr, M.H.E. for Cheviot, arrived by special coach at about four o'clock yesterday afternoon at Old John's, near the junction of the Dillmans Town and Ghris'clmrch roads. Hb \v:.s met there by Messrs Seddon and Buv.ui, M.H-Rs., the County Chairman, and several Couuiy Councillors, the County Engineer, and Inspector Emerson.
After, the fi.uial introductions ad courtesies hud been exchanged, his Excellency took seat by arrangement with the County Chairman to drive, via Kawhaka, on to Hokitika. As Mr Cassidy, the driver of the special coach, had arranged to come on with his coach to Kumara, where he could change horses, it was found that the three vehicKs which met the Governor were inadequate now for all the party • and Mr Seddon, Mr Spence, M.C.C., and Mr Kerr (District Engineer), who had intended to accompany the Governor to Hokitika, returned to Kumara in Mr Cassidy's special coach. The settlers of the Arahuia Valley turned out, and gave the vice-regal party hearty greetings as they drove along. The cavalcade reached the Hokitika town boundary at about six o'clock, where it was met by his Worship the Mayor, Mr John Tait, the Town Councillors, and other prominent citizens.
After his Excellency had seated himself in the Mayor's carriage the whole party drove into town. At the Town Hall, the Volunteers under Captain Wade were drawn up, and the various friendly societies, the Oddfellows, Foresters, and Hibernians were marshalled in order. On the arrival of his Excellency, the band struck up the National Anthem, whilst the people assembled gave three cheers. He will be hanquetted there to-night. To-morrow morning, at half-past eleven o'clock, his Excellency the Governor will arrive at Kumara, en route to Greymouth. He will be met at the Borough boundary, Main road south, by Mr R. J. Seddon and the Borough Councillors, who will present an address from the borough, and will conduct him into town. A procession will be formed, of Volunteers, school children, and Friendly Societies, which, headed by the band, will proceed (o the junction of Seddon and Main streets, where his Excellency will reply to the address. After this he will visit The Lead, to witness the hydraulic sluicing process; returning to luncheon at the Masonic Hall, before proceeding to Greymouth, where he has signified he will be present tomorrow evening at a ball and supper there in honour of his visit. The rain which fell last night has been most welcome in laying the dust, and giving a further supply of water for all purposes.
