MURDER OF TWO WHITE MEN AT NEW IRELAND. (Received February 1, 1.15 a.m.) Hobart Town, January 30. The delfgates from the various colonies to the Federal Council were invited to a picnic today, and entertained in the evening by the Mayor of Hobart. Melbourne, January 30. The second day's racing of the Geelong Clab was marred to-day by a fatal accident, Hunt, the well-known jockey, being killed in the steeplechase. (Received January 30, 1.45 p.m.) Brisbane, January 30. A telegram has been received by the Premier, the Hon. W. S. Griffith, from Mr John Pender, Chairman of the Eastern Telegraph Company, iu which he states that in consequence of the refusal of the Indian Government to lower the tariff on telegrams passing over its lines, the directors of the East° em Company cannot see their wny to efEect any substantial reduction on messages to Australia without the assistance of the colonies. Mr Pender offers a reduction of 2s 6d per word on condition that those colonies which at present do not contribute pay a share of the subsidy, and provided also that the contract with the company shall be extended for a period of twenty years from the present time. Should that be the case, the Company will endeavour to bring about a lar«e reduction on press messages.

The three men who are charged with attempting the robbery at the Commercial Bank, Collingwond, have now *H been arrested, namely, Hopkins, Murray, and Alfred Beal. Murray acknowledged he was one of the gan ff , and that when the manager fired his revolver, he instinctively put up his arm to shield his head, and received Hie shot in the arm, for which ho was treated at the Melbourne Hos piul, and the medical officer, remembering the incident of his treatment there and mentioning the matter to ! the police, Murray's arrest was chiefly due to this circumstance. The inquest on Mrsi Ravenacroft was held yesterday During the inquiry the'police produced a full concession made by the prisoner Hopkins of a plan of the attempted robbery. The jury found -Ihat deceased met her death through a gunshot wound inflicted by JM r Jj7ll by misadventure, and that Mr Hill was fully justified in using firearms to defend h,sown life and hia employers' property."
