Considerable agitation is going on among the inhabitants of Crete, and in consequence Turkish reinforcements have been despatched to the island to replace the troops recently withdrawn. M. Isanoff, Bulgarian Minister for Foreign Affairs, is still continuing negotiations with the Porte, his instructions being to stipulate for the absolute uniou of Bulgaria and Eastern Roumelia. London, January 28. The Mediterranean Squadron, under command of Admiral Lord John Hay, has been ordered to proceed to Crete. In the House of Commons to-day, Sir Michael Hicks-Beach announced the resignation of the Ministry, and added that her Majesty the Queen had j summoned the Marquis of Salisbury to I proceed to Osborne. The House of Commons is adjourned until Monday. San Francisco, January 24. The homeward Colonial mails, per Alameda, from Auckland January 26, arrived here to-day. [special to press association. ] London, January 23. H.M.S. Emerald has been ordered to proceed to America. The Queensland Quicksilver Estate Company has been registered with a capital of .£400,000. Mr Murray Smith, Agent-General for Victoria, has suggested a scheme relative to New Guinea. The various Agents-General and the Colonial Office are favourable to the scheme, and they are now awaiting the decision of the Colonial Governments before making public the details.
