After hearing the evidence for plaintiff, Mr Hannan raised a non-suit point on the ground that the summons was for refusing to transfer the property in terms of an agreement between the parties, when, in fact, defendant had actually transferred the same ; and the documents were produced showing such had been the case. The Magistrate held that Mr Hannan had established his point, and nonsuited the plaintiff. Mr Guinness gave notice of appeal. It appears (says tlio Lyttelton Times) that Howard, in addition to havin'' insured his life in three offices, made further provision for his family by joining the pioneer Lodge of Druids. After his disappearance, a claim was put in for the amount of his funeral allowance (£2O). The officers of the Lodge seem to have been in favour of paying the sum, but according to Druidical regulations, all such claims have to receive the approval of an official of the Grand Lodge, termed the District Examiner. Mr Oppenheim, the officer in question, did not deem the proofs of death sufficient, and refused to
allow the claim, which, of course, was not paid. Howard also belonged to a benefit society formed among the employees of the Addington Workshops, and Mrs Howard received from that source a payment of £ls, which, however, has been refunded to the Society.
