MISS LIZZIE LAWRENCE.
The programme put forth to-day for this clever young tragedienne’s benefit is a most attractive one, and the affair altogether promises to he a most brilliant success. No actress who has ever visited the Coast has earned more popularity than Miss Lawrence, a fact of which should she be in doubt the attendance on Thursday evening next we feel sure will convince her. The programme has been selected with great judgment and comprises Theyre Smith’s charming comedy “ Cat off with a Shilling,” a musical and elocutionary interlude, an amusing farce entitled “Betsy Baker,” and last, but not least, the famous “Quarrel and Screen Scene,” from Brinsley Sheridan’s grand old comedy “ The School for Scandal.” In the latter Miss Lawrence will appear as Lady Teagle to be one of her best renditions), and our favourite local amateur Mr C. M'Keegan has volunteered his assistance for the part of Joseph Surface. The benefit had originally been arranged for Wednesday, but when it became known that that was the evening fixed for the Adjutant’s quarterly parade of Volunteers, the entertainment was wisely deferred till the night after, Thursday. We feel sure that no one will more rejoice at the postponement than our Volunteer Corps, among whom Miss Lawrence lias many admirers.
