Lord John Manners, Post-master-General, has been elected, and the Hon. Sydney Herbert rejected. It is proposed to organise a Committee of Merchants and Shipowners in opposition to the Australian Shipping Ring: The British Government are willing to supply intended laborers to Queensland for work on the plantations. ' Mr Stephen Mason, the Liberal candidate, has been elected for MidLanark. Mr llichard Lah-r, Hone Ruler for Queen's County, aud Sir Matthew Ridley have been defeated.

Mr Wm. Sproston Caine has been defeated for Scarborough. December 5. The Conservatives have been chiefly successful in tho home counties. Mr Pearce has been elected for Govan, and the Right Hon. Sir William Dilke has been returned for Dartford. December 6. The Liberals have secured 206 seats in England, 25 in Wales, 58 in Scotland, and 1 in Ireland, and the Conservatives have obtained 214 in England, 3 in Wales, 9 in Scotland, and 17 in Ireland. Sir Samuel Wilson was rejected by 1461 votes. The Hon. E. Stanhope has been elected, and the Hon. G. C. Dawnay and Mr E. D. Gray, a Home Ruler, have been injected. The Economist, leferring to Australian railways, comments on the unpaying character of the New South Wales and Victorian lines. [SPECIAL TO MELBOURNE AGE.] London, November 20. It is probable that the French and Italian Governments will reduce their charges for the carriage of mails through those countries. November 22. Messrs Butterfield and Swire, insurance agents at Shanghai, have given orders to Messrs Scolt and Co., ship, builders, of Greenock, f.«r the construction of five steamers, each of 2600 tons, to be employed in developing the trade between China and Melbourne. November 27. It has transpired that the report of the Official Committee which was appointed by Government to investigate the proposals of Mr A. C. Baker, of South Australia, for the establishment of a federal mail service between England aud the colonies is favourable to Mr Baker's projects. Mr Thomas A. Hendricks, who, in November last, was elected Vice-Presi-dent of the United States, is dead.
