[UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Christchurch, November 6. A young man named Percy Hampaon was committed for trial to-day charged with stealing a gold watch and chain belonging to Nathaniel Tapling. The case against him is by no means strong, and for the defence it is stated the watch was given him by Tapling, who was drunk, to take care of for him, November 7. As the Penguin was coming alongside the wharf at Lyttelton this morning, a warp got foul of the propeller, and the result was that the sternpost gfive way, and the vessel will have to go into dry dock for repairs. Wellington, November 8. Mr W. H. Pilliett, who was formerly member for Stanmore in Parliameat, died here last night after a very shot t illness. He had been suffering from fever. November 9.
By a baggy accident at Peathcrston, a two year old daughter of Mr D. M'Dongall was killed. It is stated that Major Atkinson will shortly stump the colony, speaking at Tlawera first, thence visiting the South and afterwards Auckland. Wanganui, November 7. A sailor on board the s.s. Wallabi named James Moore, was drowned yesterday morning at two o’clock. He was in a state of intoxication, and had been fighting his mate Lee. Lee was found lying on the wharf insensible with his face all bloody, and he had no recollection of anything, even of being •struck by anyone. A coroner’s inquest was held last night, when a verdict was returned that deceased met his death by drowning, but there was no evidence to show that Lee or anyone else was to blame. Auckland, November 7. The ship Euterpe, Captain Doyle, from London, leports the death of a passenger, of consumption, off the Three Kings. Ada Mehnore, Captain MeMican, from London, reports that in latitude 39° 41, longitude 57° E, he encountered a cyclone and lost two .seamen. While fuiling the maia-topsail they fell from
(he yard. Andrew Baze, a Dutchman, fell overboard and was drowned, Joseph Erriokson fell on deck, and broke his neck. An alarm was at mice raised, but nothing could be done to save the man who had fallen overboard, for the sea was such as to threaten to engulf the ship herself.
