REPORT MASSACRE
OP an EXPLORING EXPEDITION OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY OF NEW SOUTH WALES. (Received November 7, 3.20 p.m.) Cooktown, November 7. The s.s.Gunga arrived to-day from Thursday Island. The captain states that when he left, two Papuan natives had arrived from New Guinea with the report that all the members of the exploring expedition sent out by the Geographical Society of New South Wales had been attacked and murdered by the natives of the Fly River district, New Guinea. (Received November 10, 11.5 a.m.) Melbourne, November 9.
Nothing further is known as to the truth of the report of the massacre in New Guinea of the Sydney Geographical expedition. A telegram appears in the Ago stating that two Malays belonging to the expedition escaped slaughter, and brought the news to Thursday Island, but they contradict each other in th"ir version of the alleged massacre.
