VOLUNTEER. FIRE BRIGADE
The monthly meeting of the Volunteer Fire Brigade was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening. There were present —Captain Burger, Lieut. Brayshaw, Foremen Anderson, Smith, and Murtha, Firemen Stevenson, Close, Schulstad, Keenan, Valentine, Ziegler, M'Mahon, Gebhardt, Adamson, Howe, Hannah, W. Barnett (Treasurer), and M. Gerraghty (Secretary). The minutes of last monthly meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and approved of. A letter was received from Mr S. M. Spiers, agent for the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Company, stating that the compauy will subscribe pro rata with any other offices having agencies iu the town. A letter was read and received from the Secretary to the Napier Demonstration Committee informing the Brigade that they have been advised by the Secretary New Zealand Fire Brigades Association, that the Government vote of £250 has been passed, and. that the Association will divide it, as it was divided last January, amongst New Zealand teams compe'rins;. A letter from Mr J. Woods forwarding his resignation as a member of the brigade, was received, and his resignation accepted. The Treasurer announced a balance to credit of brigade of £5 3s Sd. Dr. T. G. Davy and Mr J. Robinson were duly elected members of the brigade. Accounts, to the amount of £4 4s were passed for payment. The following members were elected to comprise the team to take part in the Fire Brigades Demonstration to be held at Napier in the month of January next, viz., Firemen M'Mahon, Anderson, Adamson, Schulstad, and Smith, with James Brayshaw as emergency man. A committee consisting of the Captain, Secretary, and Firemen Anderson, Ziegler, and Valentine, were appointed to draw up rules for the team, same to be snbmitted to the Brigade at next practice meeting. Foreman Anderson, of the Engine Company, and Foreman Murtha, of the Hook and Ladder Company, rep orted all gear under their charge in good repair. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Borough Council calling its attention to the bad state of the bell-tower and ladder. Also, to the New Zealand Fire Brigades Association, asking what share of the Government grant towards expenses the Kumara Brigade will receive. It was resolved that the Brigade have the usual display of fireworks and torchlight procession on New Year's Eve, and that the same quantity be procured as last year. Firemen Smith' and M'Mahon were appointed to canvass for subscriptions for the purchase of fireworks. Receipts to members' fond, £1 lis; members' entrance fees, 10s ; fines, Is. Total, £2 2s. At a committee meeting afterw:vrds it was decided to have an entertainment and ball on the night of the 28th December, to raise funds to defray the expenses of the team that are going to Napier; arid Captain Burger and Firemen Anderson and Smith were appointed to make all necessary arrangements for the same.
