MAYORAL HONORARIUM AND THE RACECOURSE.

[to the editor.] Sir—Perhaps a few words in time regarding Borough and racecourse matteis would nob be amiss. First, then, let me say that the six councillors who voted against the throwing away of £SO at the last Council meeting, as a salary to the Mayor, did what they should do ; particularly so, because it appeared that the shilling rate was meant, if earned, to go to a certain purpose; and that there was a preunderstanding regarding the rate and the Mayoral honorarium. I think the action of the six councillors deserves at least the respect of the ratepayers, for being the right men in the right place. I hold that in a small community like Kumara, where men sometimes wit bout cither social standing or other ways peculiarly adapted to fill that tiraehononred position, should have common sense to know that the honour of being Mayor should be considered ample payment. And I do not think that any man that is worthy of such honour would accept of payment. Regarding the racecourse, the Mayor or the member for the district should call a public meeting of the ratepayers, and. take their opinions on the matter,

as I for one believe the racecourse will bo a white elephant and an eye-sore, and an unbearable burden for the people of Kumara. Hoping, sir, that you will insert the above in the Kumara Times for the good of whom it may concern—l am, &c., Pro Bono Publico. . Kumara, October 7, 1885.
