COALFIELDS OF THE WORLD.
There are no less than 900 square miles of coal beds in Belgium, France has 1000, Germany 3000, Great Britain ten times as many as little Belgium, India five times, and North America and China each twenty times as many as the United Kingdom, which at present furnishes no less than 163,000,000 tons a year. There are but six principal countries in the world which, supply our 10,000 ocean steamers, our 110,000 locomotives, and some 200,000 fixed steam engines with their indispensable food, and these devour of it no less than 1,000,000 tons a day. Of tho prodigious quantity of fuel—--380,000,000 tousa year—Europe alone produces 285,000,000, the United States nearly 90,000,000, and the comparatively insignificant remainder falls to the share of Asia and Australia. Great Britain exports about 20,000,000 of her production of 163,000,000 tons; Germany exports 10,000,000 tons of 70,000,000 tons; Belgium exports 5,000,000 tons of her 18,000,000 tons. Austria about suffices herself with a production of 16,000,000 tons; France, however, has to import some 10,000,000 to her production of about 20,000,000 tons.
