The Bulgarians appear quite favourable to the union of Eastern Roumelia with their principality, and, as it will be observed by a cablegram to-day, Prince Alexander of Bulgaria has issued a manifesto to the inhabitants of Bulgaria and Eastern Roumelia in which he accepts the crown of the two Bulgarias, and calls upon the people to defend the union. The Prince is now on his way to Phillippopolis, the chief town of Eastern Roumelia. Philippopolis carries on a very extensive commerce both with Austria and with the East. The population of the city, which stands on a small island formed by the River Maritza, which at this place becomes navigable, is about 00,000. Owing to the quai’antlne regulations at the Egyptian ports for the prevention probably of the introduction of cholera into Egypt, the British Postmaster-Gen-eral has consented, in order to avoid the detention of mail steamers and annoyance attendant upon quarantine, to the diversion of the Brindisi mails, outwards and homewards, to the Suez Canal route ; and mails and passenger’s will now pass through the Canal inste id of by the land route through Cairo and Alexandria, and vice versa. At tiie Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, before P. Dungan and H. Burger, Esqs., J.Ps., John Keenan, a youth, was brought up charged by the police with disturbing the public peace by fighting with a Chinaman named Ah Sing, in Main street, on Saturday night last. Accused pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given in proof of the charge, and accused was fined ss, with 7s Court costs, or the alternative of six hours’ confinement. The Bench remarked that there was another matter, before disposing of the case, which they wished to speak of, and that was that frequent complaints had been made to the police, on more than one occasion, of grown-up boys being guilty at late hours at night of improper conduct in the streets. If the decision given were not taken as a sufficient caution ; if parents did not keep their children out of the streets at late hours ; or, if rows or other unbecoming conduct were still indulged in in public thoroughfares, it was well to warn these youths that in falling into the hands of the police, and coming to Court charged with any such offences, they were laying themselves open to be severely dealt with. Flood, Secretary of the Auckland Hunt Club, died yesterday morning from the injuries caused by the fall from his horse on Saturday.
The Mayor, on behalf of the Borough. Council and with the requirements of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1876,” publicly notifies that the Bank of New South Wales has been appointed to be the bank for the Kumara borough account, called “The Borough Fund Account.” The following contracts have been signed at the County Chairman’s office, viz. Supply of metal between Hokitika town boundary and Flowery Creek—Accepted : J. Whelan, 7s 5d per yard ; declined : Coyle, 8s 4d; Boyle, 9s 6d; Quinn, 9s ; Hanrahan and Stephens, Bs. Maintaining Ferry at special settlement, Teremakau River—Accepted ; R. Millson, £26 per annum ; declined : Gilmour, £80; Newton, £29 ; Cadill, £156 ; Healey, £65. The quarter-mile race between Hunt, of Wellington, and O’Loughlin, of Brannerton, for £2OO and the championship of the West Coast, will come off on Monday next. Judging by outward appearance (the Argus remarks) both men are in a state of high training, Hunt of the two apparently being the harder. But there is very little to choose between them, both looking exceedingly well. The Hillman’s Town quadrille assembly will be held at the Empire Rooms tomorrow evening, at eight o’clock.
