At (he monthly meeting of the Westland County Council held on Wednesday last, at 2 p.m., present—the Chairman (J. Grirnmond, Esq.), Messrs M‘Goldrick, Daly, Spence, Dungan, and M'Whirter, the following further business was considered and dealt with : FINANCE REPORT. For the construction of the Cedar Creek road, a sum of £3OOO is available. NEW WORKS. The following new works have been completed during the month : Road. ROADS AND TRACKS. The cost of maintaining existing roads and tracks has been very heavy for several months past, and now averages between £9OOO and £IO,OOO per annum. In the Kanieri riding the increased cost is especially noticeable. Your committee recommend a payment of £6 to Mr Cameron, for attending Revision Court at Hokitika. fox’s road, Mr M‘Whirter moved —“That Mr Muller’s offer to maintain Fox’s road for two years, at £l9 per annum, be accepted.” Mr Muller was willing to undertake the work, and this would be the cheapest way of keeping the road. Mr Dungan seconded ; Mr Muller had expended labor on the track. The motion was carried. ARAHURA RIVER-BANK PROTECTION. Mr M‘ Gold rick moved—“ That the report of the Public Works Committee, relative to protective works at Miller s, Arabura river, dated August 12, 1885, be adopted.” Mr Dungan seconded the motion. He hoped £2OO would be expended on the work, as soon as possible. Mr Jack asked if the work was necessary. The Chairman said it was necessary. The work was, however, only temporary. Mr M'Whirter thought £IOO would be enough to spend. The motion was carried on the voices. SHALLOW LEAD TRACK. Mr Dungan moved County Engineer be instructed to cany out the construction of a foot track leading from the Shallow Lead to the lower part of the Shamrock Lead, distance about ten chains, cost not to exceed £16.” The necessity for the track was great, especially for children attending school. Mr M'Whirter seconded the motion, which was carried without dissent. The Council adjourned at G p.m.
