[united press association.] Dunedin, September 7. A heavy fall of snow is reported to have taken place at Criffel, the new goldfields, which will delay the starting of niiiiii'g operations. September 9. Intelligence having reached Port Chalmers that a person had been injured at the Heads by a stone crushing him, Dr. de Lautour at once left on horseback to attend, but the doctor was thrown from his horse and had his collar-bone fractured. Wellington, September 8, Dr, Hector, Messrs M’Kerrow, Travers, Humphries, Stock, Beverley, and others are now in Masterton, and the preparations for ohserning the Sun’s eclipse are now finished. M'Kerrow, Beverley, and Humphries go to Otauhauao. The two former take observations from the Trig Station and the latter photos about 400 feet lower down. Dr. Hector and two other gentlemen proceed to Rangituraa, a higher hill, and more difficult of access, but nearer the centre of the line. Archdeacon Stock goes to Brancepelh, Messrs Beetham’s station, and Mr Teamers tabes photos from Masterton, The weather is promising. September 9. A well known prostitute was charged under the amended Police Statute with being the occupier of a disorderly house, &c. The prosecution is a private one, being brought by the residents in the neighbourhood of the house.
Interest is attached to it through it being the first case under the amended Act. After some evidence was taken the counsel for the defendant offered on her behalf to close the house and leave the neighborhood, but the counsel for p’aintiffs, while acknowledging that the closing of the house was the primary object, declined to abandon the case, as on the grounds of public morality he was instructed to press for a conviction. The case has been adjourned until Friday.
