This message was at once telegraphed to the Secretary of the Marine Department by the Harbor Master, Captain Turnbull. The following telegram was received by the Marine Department, Wellington, last evening : Collingwood, September 8.
The messenger sent to make inquiries returned with information that the barque Edwin Bassett was wrecked on Mondaylast about four miles south-west of Wanganui Inlet, and all hands (twelve in number) saved. The crew are now on the way to Collingwood. The vessel has broken up. The barque Edwin Bassett belonged to the fleet of Captain Williams, which has recently been transferred to the Union Company. She left Wellington for Newcastle on August 20, and was commanded by Captain M'Donald.
