THE SCHOOL OF MIKES.

[TO the editor.]

Sir— l can’t make out why more of our miners do not take advantage of our School of Mines. I’ve heard one or two say—“ Ob, it’s no use my attending; I’m not good enough scholar.” Now that’s all bosh. We have a thorough expert, and as great an enthusiast as Professor Black himself teaching ns (Dr. Davy), who makes everything as simple and as clear as A.B.C. Besides giving us a lecture on some scientific subject, he makes a lot of experiments every Monday night, which are highly interesting, amusing, and instructive. The idea at first was to charge £1 for entrance, so as to procure the necessary books and apparatus ; bnt to make it lighter on parties joining, it was agreed to make it ten shillings, and ha)f-a-crown a month (four half-crowns) till the pound was made up. So you see, sir, what would cost a deal of money to learn at Home or anywhere else, we can gel for absolutely nothing. I may state that we have got a very good turn-out of chemical apparatus and books—Professor Black says the best in New Zealand. Now, sir, if I could only persuade some of the youths and young men to join, I am coitaiu they would be regular in attendance afterwards. There is no time lost yet: join at once, as Dr. Davy is taking great pains in preparing lists of the subjects to be treated; so every member will know exactly what is to he dealt wMi on the followin'* night,—Yours, & H. 0.
