It is announced that M. de Freycinet has requested the English Government to make full inquiry into the circumstances attending the reported death of Olivier Pain. Statistics up to the present time give the mortality in Spain from cholera as eighty-three thousand. ♦ [SPECIAL TO MELBOURNE AGE.] London, August 19. The Governments of Germany and Austria express themselves as adverse to the proposals of the Anglo-Turkish military convention, by which the Sultan agreed to send troops to garrison Snnkim. The Standard says that the Saltan has now declined to carry oat the conditions of the alliance, and refuses to send Turkish troops to Egypt. It is rumoured that King Alphouso, of Spain, has resigned the colonelcy of the regiment conferred upon him as a mark of special honor during his visit to Germany. August 23. Prince Bismarck's reply to Spain's protest regarding the annexation of the Carolines is evasive, and a rupture between the Powers is imminent. August 24. It is rumoured that the Caroline Islands' difficulty will be settled by a compromise between Spain and Germany.
