The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. SATURDAY, AUGUST 22, 1885.

Our Wellington correspondent telegraphs this afternoon : —“ After questions and notices of motion, the House went into Committee on the Land Bill, which passed through all its stages at 3 a.m.— This morning Mr Seddon got an amendment carried that in the townships of Dillman’s Town, Kanieri, and Blue Spur, the Warden may grant twenty-one-year leases to section-holders and miners. ”

Late cablegrams state that the cholera is spreading with alarming rapidity in Marseilles and neighbourhood.—The garrison at Kassala, in Soudan, which liaa held out so long against the besieging Arabs, have at last made terms with thorn, and the investment of the town has been discontinued.

The firm attitude taken by the Salisbury Government in the matter of the RussoAfghan frontier question is bringing about more hopeful assurances of peace, and, as a consequence, the Guards, who for some time past have been stationed at Cyprus, have been ordered Home.

The parliamentary correspondent of the West Coast Times telegraphed last evening :—“The Premier laid on the table all papers and correspondence in connection with the Kumara Sludge-channel No, 2,

and referred to a minute endorsed on one of the papers by Mr Rolleston, agreeing with a money grant towards construction of work. Mr Rolleston stoutly denied the interpretation set upon his minute. He had actually refused even to grant a public survey, but if Government agreed to give a money grant, he (Mr Rolleston) would not have offered any opposition. The matter then dropped.—A report from the Goldfields Committee was laid on the table, in which is recommended that a liberal scale of aid to prospecting be framed on the regulations advertised by the Westland County Council. —Mr Conolly moved, without notice, to extend the time another week in the Kumara ara Sludge-channel inquiry, for the purpose of bringing up a report, as the corncommittee would not be ready in time. The motion was carried.” The Christchurch coach arrived this afternoon at the usual hour. Commander Edwin wired at 10.40 a.m. to-day : —“ Bad weather may be expected between north-east and north and west ; glass further fall, and rain. Indications bad.”

Messrs Lawson and party, who are prospecting the deep ground at Woodstock, opposite the Kanieri bridge, have commenced a new shaft. The Times reports that in the shaft previously bottomed the gold went half an ounce to the load, some coarse gold was in the sample washed, including one piece over two penny-weights. Owing to that shaft caving in it was thought better to sink a fresh one. The ground is very wet and will require pumping. There are now eight men in the party. A sixth share in Giddens and party’s extended sluicing claim at Ross Terrace is announced for sale by tender. Particulars can be obtained on application ’ to Mr Thos. Jones. Tenders will be received up to Saturday, 29th inst. ; they are to be addressed to Mr A. Foldi, Dillman’s Town. Miserableness.—The most wonderful and marvelous success, in cases where persons are sick or pining away from a condition of miserableness that no one knows what ails them (profitable patients for doctors), is obtained by the use of Hop Bitters. They begin to cure from the first dose, and keep it up until perfect health and strength is restored. Refuse unless American Co. ’s make. Notice
