[united press ASSOCIATION.] Christchurch, August 20. At a meeting of the East and West Coast Railway Committee, held to-day, a resolution was agreed to urging the Government to make provision in the Public Works Statement for an early commencement of the line under conditions that will admit of rapid progress. The meeting also appointed a sub-committee to organise an extended membership. The North Canterbury Board of Education at its meeting to-day, agreed to a resolution proposed by Mr Alfred Saunders, deprecating the action of the Leuislative Council, in excluding from public schools all children under the age of seven years. The lumpers' strike again9t the Shaw, Saville and Albion Company still continues at Lyttelton, but it is not anticipated that there will be any delay in the departure of the Tainui, as thp work of handling the cargo is being done by the sailors and non-union men.

Wellington, August 20. In the Divorce Court to-day, the case Ryan v. Ryan was heard. The suit was by the wife, on (he grounds of cruelty and desertion. The parties were married at Rockhampton, Queensland, in 1864; subsequently living at Echuca, where it is alleged respondent committed adultery and stabbed petitioner in the cheek with a pocket knife. Shortly after this respondent left Victoria and obtained employment in the Gear Meat Co., Wellington, and was in the habit of sending his wife .£1 per week. In November last he returned to Echuca and endeavoied to get her to sign a deed of separation, which she refused, unless .£3 per wepk was paid to her and their, children. He then left for Wellington, where the wife and family followed him, ;\nd the present proceedings were taken. The case was adjourned until to-morrow. Auckland, August 19.
