We have received Nos. 14 and 15 Hansard—debates to August 4.
At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Hokitika, yesterday, before J. Giles, Esq., R.M., George Grant, charged with larceny of jewellery to the value of .£9 from a dwelling at Kumara, was remanded to Kumara, to be brought up at the Court House to-morrow morning. Mr Inspector Emerson received news late of Monday night that some disturbance had occurred at Denniston, near Westport, between union and non-union coal miners, the latter being attacked by the former and driven out of their huts. Subsequently it was wired that the disturbance had subsided without ranch damage being done to person or property. At the meeting of the Waste Lands ■Board held yesterday, Mr P. Dungan appeared in support of a petition from Messrs Morris, Yoysey, and others (91 signatures), against opening the block of land for agricultural lease selection, south side of Teremakau, adjoining road to Special Settlement. He spoke strongly in support of the miners petition from the Kumara goldfield, against the granting of agricultural leases, or alienating Crown lands in the neighborhood of goldfields. Mr W. Duncan opposed the prayer of the petition. After discussion it was resolved that the Board was powerless at present to make any alteration in its former decision. The Times states that the 50-acres lease applied for, and already dealt with by the Board, is situated within the reserves set apart for the East and West Coast Railway, and many a long day may probably elapse before the land can be dealt with. An excursion to the Kaneiri Lake was to take place to-day, from Hokitika, under the auspices of the Chairman and members of the County Council, who will formally open the recently completed road to the lake. The County Council party were to leave the Council Chambers at about half-past eight this morning. A miner named Quirk, on the Upper Buller, died under distressing circumstances on the Ist inst. He was going home with his mate a little the worse for liquor and went to sleep on the road. As he did not reach home that night his mate searched for him, and ultimately his dead body was found in the Matakitaki River in nine inches of water. Hunt, who is to run O’Loughlin, is said to be able to jump as well as run, and has backed himself to jump Berkley, a well-known athlete, a hop, step, and jump for £2O aside. The contest is to .take place on Saturday. In a running match on the Basin Reserve, Wellington, recently, he ran away from Wynn-Wil-liams very easily. The Kumara quadrille assembly will meet at the Adelphi Theatre to-morrow evening ; dancing to commence at eight o’clock. Miserableness. —The most wonderful and marvelous success, in cases where persons are sick or pining away from a condition of miserableness that no one knows what ails them (profitable patients for doctors), is obtained by the use of Hop Bitters. They begin to cure from the first dose, and keep it up until perfect health and strength is restored. Refuse unless American Co.’s make. Notice Easily Proven. —lt is easily proven that malarial fevers, constipation, torpidity of the liver and kidneys, general debility, nervousness, and neuralgic ailments yield readily to this great disease-conqueror, American Co.’s Hop Bitters. It repairs the ravages of disease
