The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. MONDAY, AUGUST 17, 1885.

Mil. Wm. Evans, Executor for the late Joseph Phillip Klein, sen., publishes a long letter in the West Coast Times of Saturday, in defence of his disposal of the Hokitika Evening Star to Messrs D. Curie and Co., and the charges made in the two last issues of July, in the late Hokitika Evening Star, by Mr Joseph P. Klein, jnn., of "oppression, tyranny, and misrule." We. regard Mr Evans* reply as a complete refutation to the accusations ;uid charges made against, him. Notwithstanding that Mrs Klein's (the mother's) and Carl Klein's (i.he broi her'.s) signatures were appended to the tender alleged to be signed by them, in conjunction with Joseph Klein, for the purchase of the Star, Mr Evans states that when he produced the tender to them, Carl " mnst emphatically protested that he had never seen the document before, and did not or consent to have it signed ; his mother also

sni<l slie Iciihw nothing aliout it, and had not signed it." Mi Evans thou

inquired for Joe, and accused him of signing the three names; "he seemed taken aback for a momeut, but almost directly turned upon his mother and said she did sign it; did she want to

make him out a forger, &c. ? The poor woman reluctantly said she might have signed it, but she must have been out of her mind if she did ; but Carl insisted he did not sign the document." The refutation occupies close on three columns of the Times. Mr Evans has mnde a very good defence, and we consider that in his duty as executor to the late Joseph P. Klein, he acted in the best interests of the estate, and for the family as a whole.
