BOARD OF EDUCATION.
+ The monthly meeting of the Westland Board of Education was held at Hokitrka on Tuesday evening last. The members present were Messrs Grimmond (chairman). Rose, Jack, M'Whirter and Rae. The minutes were read and confirmed. The Times reports of matters pertaining to this part of the district: — CORRESPONDENCE. Letter from the Education Department, forwarding grant for statutory capitation £s2l.—Received. Telegram from Mr R. .J. Seddon, M.H.R., stating that th« Westland and Grey Education Boards Bill had passed ; also applying for leave <>(' ahsonce.— Lea ye gianted as ivqucs^il. Letter from Knmai:i Rrlmnl o:>muiiltee, forwarding acconuis I'm- pa} ment.— Received.—Some discussion took place
respecting an account for £3O, which the Board had paid, but respecting which statements had been made to the effect that the work reallv performed •was worth only £ls or £l6, instead of £3o.—Mr Rose said Mr Voysey, one of the Kumara Committee, informed him that three members of the committee had been appointed to supervise the •work.—Mr Rae moved., and Mr Jackseconded the following resolution : "That the Kumara Committee be requested to reply to the letter from the Board in reference to the amount of £3O 3s, paid for repairs to Mr Hohnea ; and forward to the Board the contract entered into with Mr Holmes, and if extras were sanctioned to state who sanctioned them, and the amount of such extras."—Carried. From the Stafford Committee applying for permission to get a clock repaired. Referred to the Secretary with power to act. VACATIONS. The Chairman moved, by notice, the following resolution :—" That clause 13 of the rules and regulations for "Westland schools, be amended to read as follows : The following shall be the vacations during the year; four weeks at Christmas, commencing on December 14th : one week at Easter, commencing on Easter Monday, and two weeks at midwinter, commencing on first Monday in July." The reason for the resolution was that the teachers' examination could take place during vacations.— Carried. SECOND ASSISTANT TEACHERS. A committee was appointed to revise the regulations for second assistantteachers, and report. PRINTING EXAMINATION PAPERS. Considerable discussion took_ place respecting the printing of examination p a p ers ._Mr M'Whirter said that the Secretary stated that the Government would only charge £5 for printing these papers. He moved., and Mr Grimmond seconded, that the papers lie printed at Wellington.—Carried. ACCOUNTS. Several accounts were passed for payment, after which the Board adjourned at 11.30 p.m.
