A case of small-pox, of an extremely serious nature, has been revealed on board the French steamer Oceanien. The vessel arrived in Sydney harbour twelve days ago, and the medical authorities are informed that the eruption was visible on the third day after the vessel's arrival. Of course the vessel has been quarantined, but the disease has had much time to spread. The late Ex-President General Grant's funeral took place on Saturday, at Brooklyn. The procession, which was of a most imposing character, was six miles in extent. The Hospital inquiry was continued on Saturday, the Court adjourning shortly before six till seven o'clock in the evening, and, after taking further evidence, the proceedings were concluded at about halfpast eight. The presiding magistrates, Dr. Giles and Major Keddell, thanked the gentlemen more immediately concerned in the matter and the witnesses for their attendance, and the manner in which they had given their evidence. They would proceed to Hokitika, where they would draw up their report for the Government, and until then the result of their inquiry would not transpire. The dredge at the Grey, it is reported, is making fine headway in scooping out a channel into the lagoon on the north bank of the river. It is only at low water that the full extent of the work being done can be properly gauged. Thomas Hunt, of Wellington, challenges T. O'Loughlin to run from 50 yards to a quarter of a mile for £SO to £IOO a-side. The return draught match between the draught players of Brunnerton and those of Nelson Creek came off at the Library at Nelson Creek, on Saturday afternoon ; and a very pleasant time was spent by the players, all of whom enjoyed themselves thoroughly. There were seven players on each side, and each pair played six games The score stands thus —Brunner, 21 ; Nelson Crrek, 13. Drawn games, 8. Marshall, for Nelson Creek, and Sampson, for Brunner, each scored 3 to their opponents 2 and 1 respectively. It was arranged that in a month's time a return [ match will take place.
