[united press association.! Wellington, August 5. The Town Hall, Palmerston North, was totally destroyed by fire at 11.15 last night. The Public Library, Borough Council Chambers, and Road Board's Office, in the same building, were also destroyed. The Road Board's safu was removed, but lias not yet been opened. The council's safe passed through the fire, and on its being opened the contents were found to be uninjured. With the exception of a few papers and maps belonging to the council, nothing was saved. Walton's drapery establishment and the Bank of New Zealand adjoining had a narrow escape, but fortunately the night was calm. Insurances—On the hall, £IOO in the New Zealand ; on the library, £IOO in the same office.
A smart shock of earthquake was felt at 5.20 this evening. There were a great many visitors at the Exhibition to-night.
Four antelopes arrived by the Tamsni, from Foochow, for Mr Bathgate, M.H.R., Dunedin. Christchurch, August 5.
A commission agent named George M'Kay attempted to commit suicide today by cutting his throat with a tableknife. Fortunately he only inflicted a flesh wound, and is expected to recover. Dunedin, August 5.
Two boys, who had been carrying on a series of housebreaking and shoplifting exploits were sentenced to two months' imprisonment on minor charges, and committed for trial on two others.
The Land Board adjourned on account of the death of W. Arthur, chief surveyor, and forwarded a letter of condolence" to his widow. The funeral was largely attended. The following is the result of the Bruce election :
