At a special meeting of the Nelson Chamber of Commerce held to-day, the following resolution was carried unanimously :—"That it is inexpedient that the San Francisco mail service should be discontinued, providing that favourable arrangements can be made by the Government for its continuance, and that America bears a fair proportion of its cost." Wellington, July 21. The detectives are at present engaged investigating the alleged case of poisonr ing, by which two old people, after partaking of some soup, showed symptoms of poisoning, but quickly recovered after medical treatment. James, jeweller, has presented a cheque for £6O to be divided amongst the members of the police force in Wellington and Lyttelton, who traced and captured Allendale, the burglar. Dunedin, July 21. A young man named Edward Chapman was charged at the Police Court, by his father, with attempted suicide, and remanded. He was only 20 years of age and had attempted suicide with a penknife. A Volunteer for being absent without leave from a Government parade, notice of which was given at the previous parade, was fined 10s and costs. Auckland, July 20. A seam of coal, nine feet thick, has been discovered at Whareakara, opposite Grahamstown. July 21. The Zealandia, which sailed this afternoon, had on board 10 boxes specie, valued at £50,000 shipped in Sydney by the Bank of Australasia, and consigned to the Californian Bank, San Francisco. Among the passengers were Detectives Tracey and Badger, in charge of Maxwell, charged with the murder of Preller, at St. Louis. New Plymouth, July 21. Mr Foulis, head school master, and late Inspector at Wanganui, died from the effects of a fall from a horse.
