Mr Ferdinand Rothschild has been elected member for Aylesbury, in room of Sir Nathaniel Rothschild, the late member, who has been raised to the Peerage. Mr Rothschild headed the poll by a large majority. A deputation headed by the Ri«hl; Ron. Rolit. Fowler, M.P., and Lord Mayor of London, waited upon Lord George Hamilton. First Lord Adruir-
alty, to-day. His Lordship stated, in reply to the question put by the deputation, that Government had decided to re-classify the ironclads and discard those which were inefficient. He further slated that Government would cooperate with the various colonies in the work of defending their principal towns. (Received July 20, 0.45 a.m.) July 18. It is annouuced that'the English Afghan Boundary Commission has encamped at a distance of seventeen miles northward of Herat. The Agent-General for New South Wales, Sir Saul Samuel, has announced to-day that hia Government has decided to abandon the projected, loan for the present, owing to the uncertainty whether peace would be maintained. Shaw, Saville, and Albion Company's steamship Doric left Plymouth this afternoon for New Zealand. (Received July 20, 0.45 a.m.) St. Petersburg, July 18. The Journal de St. Petersburg, in an article to-day on the movements of the Russians in Zulfikar Pass, states that they are of an unimportant character ; and adds that Russia will do nothing likely to compromise the present nego tiations for the peaceful, settlement of the frontier question.
[special to press association.] London, July 15. The consideration of the Federation Enabling Bill in Committee has been postponed from to-morrow until Mouday next. Sir S. Samuel, AgentGeneral for New South Wales, has, on behalf of his Government, submitted further amendments in the Bill. It is reported that H.M.S. Beacon will be presented to one of the Australian colonies. The Beacon is a doublescrew composite gun vessel of 630 tons, carrying four guns. July 16. Russia claims what practically amounts to the command of the Zulfikar Pass, and the Czar offers to refer the matter to the Afghan Frontier Commission ; but the Marquis of Salisbury has declined to accede to this. Three thousand Russian troops are now in the vicinity of the Pass. A'l the Powers, with the exception of Russia, assent to England issuing an Egyptian loan. This is regarded as a triumph for the Marquis of Salisbury. Sir William M'Arthur is advocating the reduction of duty on the importation of Colonial wines.
