WESTLAND BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The Board of Education for the District of Westland met at Hokitika last evening, at seven o’clock; present— Mr M'Whirter (chair), Messrs Rae, Griraraond, Jack and Rose. The minutes were read and confirmed. The following business pertaining to this part of the district is extracted from the West Coast Times : CORRESPONDENCE. The Treasurer’s statement was read, showing balance on July 14, to credit of general account, £357 14s lOd, and to credit of building account, £956 10s 3d.—Received. Prom the Secretary of Education declining to recognise Mr Whelan’s claim for £1 10s.—Received. From the same, applying for list of books in use in the district.—Received, and referredjto Messrs Mueller, Rae, and the Secretary to reply. From the Chairman of the Kumara School Committee enclosing a letter from the head teacher, expressing a hope that the capitation allowance would not be affected by sickness amoug the pupils.—Received.
From the Chairman of Waimea School Committee, enclosing tenders for fencing.—Received, and tender of Mr R. Johnston, at £3l 4s 9d accepted. From the Stafford Committee, forwarding accounts due to Mr Crebar, and requesting permission to expend the balance, £1 14s 6d, in graveling.— Request granted.
From the same, complaining of the slow progress made by the contractors for erecting the school; also letter from Messrs Duncan and Co., contractors, stating that they would not interfere with the opening of the school.—Received. From Rev. J. Hoaking, reporting his son’s progress at Nelson College, and forwarding account for quarterly payment for scholarship.—Amount ordered to be paid. Letter from Mr J. Gibson, was similarly dealt with. From Messrs Yoysey and Jamieson, members of Kuraara School Committee, complaining that they had not seen certain accounts for repairs before these were sent to the Board.—Received and referred to the Enmara School Committee. From the head master Stafford School, applying for bonus of £lO on account of Andrew Stevenson, pupil teacher, having passed his examination before the Education Department, within two years.—Request granted. From Mr Ryan, Inspector of Works, complaining of reflections cast on him by Mr M‘Whir ter, and reporting on certain works in progress.—Received. [At this stage of the proceedings Mr Mueller took his seat.J Resolved that the per centage paid to Mr Ryan for the Stafford School be five per cent; also that the per centage for Upper Crossing School be five per cent, and horse hire. Prom Messrs Davie and Co., contractors, Upper Crossing School, applying for an extension of time of fourteen days.—Referred to Mr Ryan. From Mr Benyon, applying for extension of time for painting.—Referred to Mr Ryan. Prom Mr Ryan, reporting progress payments, £35 Upper Crossing School, £3O Stafford School, and completion of painting at Ross School.—Received. MONITORS, Mr M'Whirtcr moved, according to notice, that the resolution forbidding monitors to compete for scholarships be rescinded. After some discussion the potion was carried} Mr Rose dissenting.
FINANCIAL. Several accounts were passed lor payment, after which the Board adjourned.
