(Received July 14, 3 p.m.) Evening. In the House of Commons to-night, the Rt. Hon. W. H. Smith, Secretary of State for the War Department, brought down a motion for supplementary estimates. In the course of his speech Mr Smith informed the House that military preparations were being contained, pending a definite settlement with Russia on the Afghan boundary question. Lord Wolseley arrived here to-day from Egypt.
[SPECIAL TO MELBOURNE AGE.] London, June 20. Childers, the last Chancellor of the Exchequer, has been granted a pension of £2OOO a year. The Canadian 4 per cent loan for five million pounds was successfully floated yesterday at an average of £lOl 2s 6d. The minimum was fixed at £99. July 1. The Russian troops on the Afghan f i on tier are constructing a bridge across the Mnrghab River to Penjdeh. A reinforcement of Russiau troops has also arrived at Sarakhs. The Persians are fortifying their frontier on the Heri Rud River along the route of Russian advance. A cannon foundry has been started in Herat. July 9. An immense sensation has been caused here by the Pall Mall Gazette publishing an article under the guise of the reform of social evils, in consequence of which the paper has been expelled from all the clubs and bookstalls. The police are also preventing the sale of the paper containing the offensive article, and the authorities threaten to take proceedings against the proprietors of the paper. In retaliation, the proprietors of the paper threaten to publish disclosures which will involve Royalty and Cabinet Miuisters.
[special to press association. ] London, July 6. The Chinese authorities are alarmed at the evident designs which Russia has upon Corea, and a fleet has been despatched to protect that place. Russian troops are massing in the vicinity of Vladivostock. July 11. Russian preparations in Asia are causing great anxiety, and it is feared that difficulty will he resumed in the autumn. Giers claims that Russia is entitled to the territory lying at the font of the Hindoo Koosh Mountains in Afghanistan. July 12. An interview between the Hon. Colonel Stanley, Secretary of State for the Colonies, and the Agents-Gen-eral, on the Recidiviste dispussion on the question will take place on Tuesday. The projected exhibition to be held in Bombay has collapsed. The German Government have ordered the German station at Bentley Bay. New Guinea, to be abandoned.
