BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordiuary meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall, on Thursday evening; present—His Worship, the Mayor (H. Burger, Esq.), Councillors Anderson, Ziegler, Olden, Campbell, Nicholson, Fitzsimons, and Maloney. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and approved of. The Town Clerk read the Public Works Committee's report, dated June 24th, as follows : " 1. Resolved —That the Committee recommend that the Council call for applications for night-watchman and the lighting of lamps. "2. Resolved—That the Committee caunot recommend Mr Ingall's application, as it is not on the line of streets." The report was received and considered. Cr. Campbell said that although the office of night watchman, vacated by Mr Orams, had been temporarily filled, he thought it was best to call for applications. Applications for office where the salary was only £25 had been called for. The Council might amalgamate several offices. It was hardly fair to make the appointment without giving other persons an opportunity of offering their services. He moved that clause 1 be adopted, and that the Council offer £1 per week subsidy to persons willing to undertake the duties. Mr Ziegler seconded the motion. He believed in giving others a chance, of making application. The Chairman thought it ridiculous to call for applications for this office; also the public might discontinue their "subscriptions if they became aware that the night watchman were paid by the Borough Council. However, he had no objection to call for applications. Clause 1, with addition, was then put and carried. Clause 2 was adopted as read. The Town Clerk then read the Finance Committee's report, which recommended payments to the amount of £49 4s Bd, including the Licensing Committee's accounts; that the account of Mr C. M'Keegan be referred to the Council ; and that the application of the Fire Brigade for the halfyearly subsidy of £25 be held over until next meeting of the Council. TliH Bank overdraft was .£545 13s. The accounts as recommended were passed for payment. On the motion of the Mayor, se-

conded by Cr. Fitzsiinons, the Fiie Brigade subsidy was passed for payment. A report from (he Inspector of Works was received, and referred to the Public Woiks Committee. On the motion of Or. Campbell, seconded by Cr. Filzsimons the sum of £2O was passed to Mr C. M'Keegan as progress payment on the Blue Bluff cutting contract, at the Zigzag, and £2O 15s for one month's maintenance contract. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Olden the Council was adjourned to Thursday, 2nd July, at 8 o'clock, aud the Chairman of Finance Committee and the Mayor authorised to interview the Manager of the Bank of New Zealand with reference to ways and means for the ensuing year.
