Tenders for tlie Western Australian loan of .£500,000 were opened to-day. The amount applied for wag £457,500, the average being £9B 2s 6d. The unallotted balance will be placed at the minimum price of £97 10s. (Received June 22, 1.25 a.m.) June 20. It is announced that Sir Stafford Nnrthcote takes the position of First Lord of the Treasury, and not Lord Salisbury, as previously telegraphed. The Premiership, however, will not be combined with this office, as is usual, but will be assumed by the Marquis of Salisbury. Sir Stafford Northcote goes to the Upper House under the tide of the Ear! of Iddlesh-igh (I). A request made by Lmd Salisbury that the Liberal p->rty should give him au assurance of support in carrying on
the business of the country has not been acceded to.
Parliament assembled yesterday after the adjournment.
The late Ministry have not yet vacated the Treasury benches, and the position of the Liberal and Conservative members respectively in the House is unchanged at present. A disastrous explosion of fire-damp took place yesterday in a colliery at Pendlebury, near Manchester. Twentytwo men were killed at once, and 140 more are now entombed, without the slightest chance of rescue. News from Port Said states that a hitch has occurred in the works for the removal of the obstruction in the Suez Canal which threatens to seriously delay the reopening of the channels blocked, as many vessels are waiting to pass the canal homeward or outwards. Evening. In the House of Commons yesterday Mr Gladstone moved that the House be further adjourned until Tuesday next, which was approved of by the House.
In the House of Lords the Marquis of Salisbury also moved a similar adjournment, as he was not as yet able to make bis promised Statement to the House. Referring to the Redistribution of Seats Bill, Lord Salisbury stated that Government objected to its being proceeded with, because its passing would prevent a dissolution before November. The motion to postpone the consideration of the measure was subsequently carried by a large majority.—[This telegram has been delayed in consequence of mutilation.] (Received June 22, 12.30 p.m.) June 21. The political deadlock still continues. Lord Salisbury is demanding to monopolise the House until the prorogation of Parliament, and is also insisting that the Liberal party shall forbear from attacking the Budget proposals. Madrid, June 20. The cholera continues to increase rapidly in the south-east of this country. During the past few days no less than 2000 cases, 800 which ended fatally, were reported from the provinces of Valencia, Castellon de la Plana, and Murcia. A few deaths have occurred in this city, and a very general feeling of alarm prevails. [special to press association.] London, June 15. In connection with the difficulty between Germany and the Sultan of Zanzibar, regarding the establishment of a protectorate over the territory in the vicinity of that town, the German Government disclaim the statement that they were sending an expedition there to enforce their rights. June 16. The failure of the Suez Canal Conference to arrive at definite conclusions regarding the control and working of the Canal has irritated the French Government. June 17. , The strike at Pittsburg has ended, the employers having agreed to the demands of the men, and in consequence all those out have resumed work. Cholera is spreading in Murcia, and it is estimated that fully 30,000 of the inhabitants have left that province. It is announced that in the new Cabinet the Marquis of Salisbury will be Secretary of State for Foreign Department, Lord Randolph Churchill Secretary of State for India, and Sir Michael Hicks Beach will be Chancellor of the Exchequer and leader in the House of Commons. June 19. Miss Smith, daughter of MurraySniith, Agent-General of Victoria, has been married to Lieutenant H. Calvert .of the 7th (Prince Royals) Dragoon Guards. Mackenzie, who recently presented several works of art to the Auckland Art Gallery, has bequeathed <£40,000 to the same institution. William Sheehan, who was arrested near Auckland .on the charge of murdering his mother, sister, and brother at Castletown Roche, and subsequently remanded home, has been brought up charged with that offence, and committed for trial.
