Tuesday’s and yesterday’s mails for the East Coast aud San Francisco were got through to the Bealey yesterday morning and night, thanks to the indomitable exertions of Arthur Davis, the driver ; but there a now difficulty presented itself. The Springfield coach (generally so regular to time, having fewer rivers to contend against) had not put in an appeai’ance, and at 8.30 this morning, Davis started from the Bealey eastward to meet it. It is improbable, therefore, that he will be able to come through to Kumara with East Cast aud Australian mails until late this evening, or till to-morrow. Besides flooded rivers, there have been several landslips to surmount, notably one at Rocky Point, so that Davis had to proceed with the mails on pack horses. On inquiry this afternoon we learn that the Springfield coach arrived at the Bealey at 2.30 p.m., but will not leave there till tomorrow morning. Commander Edwin wired at 1.25 p.m. to-day “ Bad weather may be expected between north and east, and south-east after 12 hours from now, and rain ; glass fall again soon.” Poor Mrs Dick (the Argus reports) was not long in following her husband. The old lady died on Thursday, and up to the last she was in happy ignorance of the sad fate of her life’s consort. Anticipating the danger of a shock, the friends of the old couple deemed it prudent not to acquaint Mrs Dick with her husband’s suicide, and when she died she was under the impression that her husband was detained in Greymouth with a sprained ankle. In pedestrian circles a good deal _ of interest is manifested in the forthcoming
match between T. O’Loughlin, of Brunnerton, and J. Stenhouse, of Kumara, which will be run on the Greymouth racecourse on Saturday, July 4th. The distances are six in number—from 100 yards to 600 yards—and it is generally believed that the contest will be both close and fast. Both men are said to be in good condition, although (the Grey Star reports) some think O’Loughlin a trifle too heavy, but it wants strength as well as speed to finish the longer distances. So far as we can learn Stenhouse is the favorite for the shorter distances, while O’Loughlin is considered to be quite safe for the longer events. If this is so, then for the 300 and 400 yards there will be a “big run.” The subscription to Hansard for the session is ss, payable in advance, to the Postmaster.
This Saturday evening at Dilllman’s Town, Vance Klaus Hassalaer is selling by auction a large stock of Groceries, Drapery, of every description, Wheat and Flour ; which must be sold by June 20th. Special Notice to Miners.—Vance Klaus Hasselaer has two tons of dynamite, caps, and fuses coming, which will be offered at 20 per cent below wholesale cost. —The above must be sold out quickly, as Vance Klaus Hasselaer will be leaving again in a few days.—[Advt,] Lovely Climes. There are lovely climes and places in which the evening zephyrs are loaded with malaria and the poison of fever and epidemics. To dwell there in health is impossible, without a supply of Hop Bitters at hand. These American Co.’s Bitters impart an equalizing strength to the system, and prevent the accumulation of deadly spores of contagion. Be sure and see Malarial Fever. Malarial fevers, constipation, torpidity of the liver and kidneys, general debility, nervousness and neuralgic ailments yield readily to this great disease conqueror, American Co’s. Hop Bitters. It repairs the ravages of disease by converting the food into rich blood, and it gives new life and vigour to the aged and infirm. See
