GREY COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Council met again on Tuesday morning, at the Chambers, Greymouth; Present—Councillors Clifford (Chairman), Guinness, Foley, Parfitt, Ryall, Marshall, Warren, Taylor and M‘Kechnie. A quantity of correspondence was read and dealt with. We extract from the Argus that which relates to the southern part of the county, or is of public interest, as follows ; Letter from Reuben Waite asking what action has been taken in regard to the recommendation by the Buller County Council to grant a pension to him.—Received, and applicant to be informed that the Council has voted no money, and that they cannot see their way to vote any towards a pension for him. James Noonan, of the Teiemakau, applied for a remission of rates, on account of a great part of his land being washed away.—One-third of the rates on last assessment were remitted. The Collector said that one-third of the land had been washed away, though he had in error rated it as if it was in existence yet. SALARY TO LICENSING CLERK. The question of paying a salary to the Clerk of the Brunnerton Licensing Bench was brought on for consideration. Cr. Parfitt moved that the licensing clerk of Brunnerton Committee be granted £5 as traveling expenses for this year; and that Government be asked to amend the Act so as to enable them to pay salaries to licensing clerks.—Carried. Cr. Taylor moved that the Brunnerton clerk be allowed £5 as traveling expenses for each of the two former years, less the amount he has already received as expenses. This was agreed to. GREENSTONE-LAKE-BRUNNER ROAD. Cr. Foley again moved in the matter widening the road from Greenstone to Lake Brunner.—Cr. Guinness supported the motion, as the work would confer a boon upon the district and promote settlement, but pointed out that the only way to get the work done was to apply for it under the Roads and Bridges Act. Government would not grant the money, and the County had not the means. The motion was framed in accordance with the suggestion of Or. Guinness, and amended by wording that the Road Overseer be instructed to prepare the necessary plans and specifications as required by the Act, and submit them to Government by the 30th June.——The Road Overseer said it would take a month or six weeks to carry out the necessary surveys. Motion agreed to. Cr. Guinness moved that Mr Higgins be authorised to employ the necessary survey labor to get the work done by the 30th June.—Cr. Foley seconded. Carried by 6to 3 Cr. Guinness moved that if it was impossible to do the whole of the work before the 30th, to send in all that could be completed by that date. Agreed to. GENERAL RATE. The Chairman moved—“ That this Council will at its next ordinary meeting make and levy a general rate of three half-pence in the £ upon the values of all rateable properties appearing on the valuation lists now in force within the County, for the period commencing Ist April, 1885, and terminating 31st March, 1886, and that such rate shall be payable in one sum on Monday, 13th day of July, 1886.” Cr. Warren seconded.—Carried. TEREMAKAU SETTLEMENT TRACK. Cr. Guinness brought under the atI tention of the Council that the track at the end of the Teremakau settlement was worse now than it ever was, as 40 chains of it wanted metalling.—Mr Paul said one of the settlers would undertake to metal it for £35 to £4O. It is in a very bad state The Road Overseer was directed to include this work among the contracts for maintenance and repairs he was instructed to prepare. The Council rose at 6 p.m., and adjourned to July 14th next.
