THE STATE FUNERAL OF VICTOR HUGO. (Received June 3, 1.15 a.m.) London, Jane 2. The series of busts of distinguished English statesmen which have been executed for the Sydney Art Gallery by Mr Woolner, R.A., are now completed, and the statues will be shipped to Australia at once. The Daily News to-day states that King Christian, of Denmark, has been requested by England to arbitrate between that country and Russia on the Afghan frontier question, and that his Majesty has consented to act in that capacity, (Received June 2, 12.50 p.m.) Paris, June 2. The State funeral of Victor Hugo took place to-day, when the remains were conveyed to their final resting place in the Panthion. The procession was of a most imposing character, and was witnessed by an enormous crowd " h“ thronged the sheets along the line of route. Several Communists who were carrying a red flag in coalmen-
tion of the recent decree were arrested on starting, but in other respects the proceedings were orderly.
