A CURIOUS COMPUTATION.

Somebody of a mathematical turn, with nothing better to do, has made the following computation, which is curious, if not essentially correct. He says that a German mile—about five English miles—contains 25,856 feet; a square German mile contains, therefore, 688,500 square feet. The superficial area of the Lake of Constance being eight and a-half German square miles, therefore contains 5,682,000,000 square feet. There are living on the surface of the globe, at this moment in round numbers, about 1,430,000,000 human beings. Let every man have four square feet allotted to him, and if the lake was frozen over, the whole human family might find standing room upon its surface. Should the weight prove too great, the ice break, and the whole human race be submerged, it would only raise the level of the lake about six inches.
