The police have made two arrests in connection with the late jewellery robbery here, viz., John Davis, a Mulatto, at Wellington, and a young man named Appendale, at Lyttelton. The latter had been employed at the Te Aro Hotel, and on the room which he occupied being searched a couple of keyhole tools were found, also a gimlet, and it is said that in a carpet bag lying in his room some of the missing property was discovered. The police are very reticent. The Loan Agents telegraph that the new loan is quoted at two per cent, premium. The Government have also received intimation that Russia has accepted the proposals of England, so that peace is assured. June 1. The Government have received a communication from the Cable Coraasking them jointly with New South Wales to continue the subsidy to the cable between Australia and New Zealand for a further period of ten years. The New Zealand Government have expressed a strong inclination to discontinue the subsidy, and as the line is now finished those using it should be made to pay. They are, however, in communication with the Sydney Government on the question. The Victorian Government have asked the Government of New Zealand to reduce the charge on cables along the New Zealand lines to 6d per ten words, but the Commissioner of Telegraphs has declined to accede to the request. Auckland, June 1. John Maim, aged 70, an inmate of the Old Men’s Refuge, cut his throat with a table knife yesterday, and died at the hospital this afternoon. Thunderbolt is to be shipped to Melbourne to take part in the Cup and Derby. It is rumoured that he has been purchased by H. P. Lance, for £2OOO,
